Algarve's ''Green Key'' Establishments

11th June 2018: 10 eco-friendly ‘Green Key’ establishments

A record number of 10 establishments in the Algarve were awarded ‘Green Key’ eco-labels this year, double the amount of last year.

Seven hotels – Conrad Algarve (Almancil), Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas (Vilamoura), Pine Cliffs (Albufeira), Vila Galé Albacora (Tavira), Aqua Pedra dos Bicos (Albufeira), Vale D’El Rei (Lagoa) and Velmar (Albufeira) – were awarded as well as agrotourism farm Casa Vale da Lama (Lagos), hostel Casa Biota Este and short-term rental unit Casa Biota Oeste (Vila do Bispo).

The accolade is awarded by the European Blue Flag Association and recognises sustainable and eco-friendly policies at hotels, short-term rentals, campsites and restaurants.

Algarve tourism boss Desidério Silva congratulated the awarded establishments: “Here’s more proof that the Algarve is moving towards sustainable tourism, always focusing on its social, economic and environmental benefits.”

Silva, who will be replaced by João Fernandes at the end of July, added that it is “very important” to continue on this “green path”.

“It is the only way we can be considered a top tourist destination on an international level.”

“The Green Key award is the leading standard for excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry,” the Green Key website explains.
